£35 MILLION FOR THE EVERYMAN AND PLAYHOUSE - "A rip-off to support the few"?

WE POST THIS COMMENT FROM ONE OF OUR CULTURAL CORRESPONDENTS IN THE INTERESTS OF PROVOKING PUBLIC DEBATE (and stirring things up a bit, ed)....

I have been reading a lot recently about the Everyman Playhouse redevelopment and I am absolutely astounded that these 2 poorly attended theatres will get £25 million pounds of local funding.. a further £8million will come from the Arts Council.
I dont know what you think, but there seem to me to be at least 2 other theatres in town, The Neptune and the Royal Court, which could do with a couple of million each to refurbish them.
I know the Neptune is closed at the moment but the Royal Court seems to be quite busy, and when they have been producing their own shows they sell out.
I know the history behind the Playhouse, but £35million, come on it's a ripoff to support the few.
Maybe 2000 people go to the Everyman and the Playhouse each week, and if they were to pay £1 extra it would take over 335 years to repay the money.
So the public are expected to sponsor the art snobs for the next 3 centuries.
any way just my tuppence worth

I think you are overeacting at least the Playhouse and Everyman theatres will still be here in 2009 unlike the 20 odd million that is being wasted on capital of culture.

I agree with anonymous about the waste of capital of culture money but Tony has a point, the average person in Liverpool cannot afford to subsidise the theatres more than they already are, the knobs that can afford to go to the theatre should pay more to attend.

I agree with anonymous on this one. Easy to spend other people's money I know but at least this plan shows a commitment to continuity and development.

Also fits in with other areas where Liverpool has the potential for development like films and telly.

Hard to be faced with a one-off hit like this when there's so much waste going on but I'd be for it.

Another Labour manifesto idea??
give every person registered as living in Liverpool, a free ticket to attend one of these subsidised theatres of their choice, then come back and ask for their opinion as to if we should increase the ticket price or increase their council tax?

Iy you short minded people actually knew how these theatres were funded then you might have a point, bus as it is obvious that you haven't a clue then why talk about it?

How the council use Ripa to spy on you....
